問題詳情

3. There are countless historical sites in China, a country with a 5,000-year-history.Among them is an extraordinary Buddhist relic named Mogao Grottos, which is located near the city of Dunhuang in Gansu province.     A grotto, or cave, is a common form of early Buddhist temple. The reason, according to scholars, is that India, the birthplace of Buddhism, has long, hot summers. Digging a hole in a rocky mountain face is far cheaper than building a temple, and caves, which are sturdy, durable, cool in summer and warm in winter, are fine places to live. Moreover, most mountains are in remote areas, which is an advantage for monks who need a quiet environment for meditation.    Apart from the sculptures of Buddhas, there are murals, or wall paintings, all over the place in these temples. They were painted by the monks and pilgrims passing through Dunhuang. The murals cover an area of over 42,000 square meters.Zhang Daqian, a well-known Chinese painter, was amazed at the artistry of those murals and copied many of them during his multiple visits.   In the early 20th century, Wang Yuanlu, the self-appointed guardian of these temples, accidentally discovered a large collection of Buddhist manuscripts in a secret chamber.Rumors of these manuscripts brought European explorers, who journeyed across Central Asia to see and try to obtain them. Wang launched an ambitious repair project in the temples, funded in part by money donated by the neighboring towns and European explorers. Now the Mogao Grottos are not only a popular tourist attraction but also a World Heritage Site.
