2. Pompeii is the site of an ancient city near Naples, Italy. Over two thousand years ago it was a beautiful resort where wealthy Romans spent their summer vacation; now, only its ruins remain.     Pompeii is located on the eastern shore of the Bay of Naples, near the base of a large volcano, Mt. Vesuvius. One day, a tragic incident turned the prosperous city into ashes. A huge dark cloud rose high up into the sky from the towering mountain; then dense smoke filled the air, blanketing everything. All of a sudden, rocks, ashes, and debris began flying through the air and showering down onto the city below. On August 24th in the year 79A.D. , Mt. Vesuvius erupted, resulting in one of the most terrible catastrophes the world has ever seen.     Although some people managed to flee the city upon noticing the first signs of the dark cloud, and thereby escaped the calamity, many had no chance to escape. The city of Pompeii, along with more than two thousand people, was buried under ash and pumice. The volcanic eruption lasted for three days, and when it finally ceased Pompeii had disappeared beneath twenty feet of rock and ash.     For nearly 1,700 years Pompeii remained hidden from view. Then, in the year of 1748, an Italian farmer accidentally discovered parts of the buried city’s walls and some marble inscriptions. Archaeologists soon began slowly excavating the ancient site, unveiling the mystery of this long forgotten Roman city. Today Pompeii is one of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions. Curious visitors come from all over the world to explore the ruins of a city that was frozen in time for 1,700 years.
