問題詳情

Even if you’re not a baseball fan, you may have heard of or read about superstars Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Roger Clemens. They were among the greatest baseball players ever. Or were they? Out of these four legends, only McGwire has actually confessed to using banned substances in baseball. The other three were merely suspected of taking steroids and have been denied their claim to fame in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Exactly what are steroids, and why are they in the spotlight?Steroids are natural compounds including cholesterol and the sex hormone testosterone. Steroids are crucial substances for the proper function of the body. However, anabolic steroids are man-made compounds that are similar to testosterone. These have become popular, as they offer improved endurance, strength, and more muscle mass. Their use and abuse as performance-enhancing drugs has raised the concerns of the medical community and caused parents, teachers, coaches, and the general public to worry. Anabolic steroids have been associated with liver damage, high blood pressure, baldness, and infertility, among other ailments. In recent years, their abuse has been seen anywhere from bodybuilding gyms to the playing fields of youth who seek physique-altering chemicals, not necessarily for athletics. Though the legitimate use of steroids and anabolic steroids does play a role in medicine, their use without a prescription and the extremely high dosages abusers take them in result in various health problems. On a different note, is it fair to allow the use of steroids as a performance enhancing substance on the field of sports? Apparently, this issue has ruffled the feathers of the Baseball Hall of Fame and caused an uproar in the International Olympic Committee.Athletes surrendering to steroids in order to reach record-breaking performances are guilty as charged. Likewise, teenagers who succumb to taking anabolic steroids in order to alter their appearances are just as guilty. Non-prescribed doses and abuse of steroids can not only lead to serious addiction, but create a heavy burden for society.
