問題詳情

五、閱讀測驗(@ 2分;30%)Wind and solar energy plants have been around for decades, and during that time they’ve improved substantially. Energy systems now cost less money and produce more electricity. Sadly, scientists have not yet been able to control the weather, and that’s a big problem. If the wind doesn’t blow, wind turbines don’t turn, and if the sun hides behind the clouds, then solar power plants don’t charge up. Ultimately, this leaves a lot of alternative power plants drained and useless. In an attempt to prevent this dilemma, a revolutionary solar plant was constructed in Seville, Spain. This massive plant can generate energy 24 hours a day. The PS10 Solar Power Plant has a central tower surrounded by roughly 624 movable mirrors. The mirrors reflect rays from the sun toward the tower’s solar receiver. Inside the receiver are tanks filled with heaps of salt. The salt is a special type of salt that liquefies at a high temperature and remains hot for long periods of time. The salt is perfect for getting power plants through the sunless evenings and nights. When temperatures rise to 900 degrees Celsius, the salt melts. Water is then pumped through the substance, causing it to rapidly boil and then quickly turn into steam. This also cools the salt and allows the process to begin again. The steam is used to drive the tower’s electricity-producing turbines. Because it uses only seventeen percent of the energy it produces to operate, the PS10 is considered highly efficient. If future plants want to be effective, stay productive through the night, and avoid sunlight dependency, towers such as the PS10 will need to become more prevalent in the future.
