問題詳情

The largest living thing on Earth is not the blue whale, which can measure up to 34 meters in length, nor is it the massive, three-ton African bush elephant. Instead, that title belongs to the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Stretching from just south of Papua New Guinea and running parallel to the coast of Queensland, the reef is actually longer than the Great Wall of China at over 2,000 kilometers from end to end and is the only living organism that can be seen from outer space. Considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world and designated a World Heritage Area in 1981, it is not a single reef but is comprised of nearly 2,500 individual reefs and over 900 islands. The reef is home to a virtual cornucopia of marine life, including mollusks, whales, dolphins, seahorses, countless species of birds, and over 400 different types of coral. As it is the largest protected marine park in the world, the reef has become a safe haven for endangered species like loggerhead and green sea turtles, and the humpback whale utilizes the reef as a breeding ground. The inspiration for the main character in the movie Finding Nemo, the clownfish, also calls the reef its home. While this abundance of wildlife attracts hundreds of thousands of snorkelers looking to catch a glimpse of the beauty the reef offers, its more dangerous creatures are not to be taken lightly. The infamous box jellyfish, and the golf-ball-sized, blue-ringed octopus are both extremely venomous, and their stings can be fatal to humans. Various shark species are in abundance in the reef as well. Though most sharks are non-threatening to humans, predators like the tiger shark and ferocious great white shark have been known to roam the fertile waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
