He stood, fixedhis silk shirt and Brooks Brothers tie, and winked. “You had a couple of good moves, butyou’ve got to keep thinking.” He gave me a hug. “Good game.” Whenever we’re together, my grandfather and I always seem to end up playing chess.We usually play late into the night, listening to classical music and discussing world events.I can remember one particular night, when we played until three-thirty in the morningIt was like any other game. Each move took my grandfather three or four minutes. Hecarefully planned each action, contemplated every possible countermaneuver, and thendouble checked to see if he forgot any conceivable move. That is why he’s so difficult tobeat and why he’s so difficult to play. He thinks like he plays: careful, deliberate, andprecise. It’s taken me a while to understand him. In fact, it’s taken me a while to understandmyself. Not everything can be seen as easily as in chess. Not all moves are as predictable;not all decisions are as defined. As I look back on the games I’ve played with mygrandfather, I wonder if he knows how much he’s really taught me. That patience is learned;that concentration is developed; that persistence pays off in the end. I wonder if I shouldtell him.
