2. English is now the most widespread of the world’s languages, although Mandarin Chinese is spoken by more people. English is used by 300 million native speakers, 300 million second language speakers, and a further 100 million people who have adopted English as a foreign language. It is the official language or one of the official languages in over 40 countries, and is spoken in many other parts of the world. Military terms like “ambulance,” diplomatic（外交的）terms like “diplomat,” and words for entertainment（娛樂）like “ballet” and “sport” are all borrowed from French. These borrowed words not only make the English language more interesting but also make it “international” in another way.
