IV. Reading Comprehension (30%)
(A)In nature, sometimes the smallest things can determine the difference between life and death. Over millions of years of evolution, animals have developed special traits to help them find food or avoid becoming food. While some have developed simple features like sharper claws or eyes, others have developed strange, yet fascinating qualities that seem almost too unbelievable to be true.Among these traits is the ability to blend in with the environment, also known as crypsis. Some animals use crypsis to hide from their enemies, disguising themselves to look like rocks, sticks, leaves, or even bird droppings. Others, like the leaf-patterned Gaboon viper, use their camouflaging abilities to sneak up on their prey instead. Still others use crypsis so effectively that you can’t see them even when you are looking directly at them. For example, some octopi can immediately change their appearance to match the color, pattern, and texture of the rocks on the ocean floor. (Dec. S1)Interestingly, crypsis is not always related to the sense of sight. Some creatures use sound to keep other animals from finding and eating them. Take, garden tiger moths for example. They not only have furry bodies to absorb sound, but they also make clicking sounds to jam the sonar that bats use to hunt. Some creatures trick other animals into mistrusting their sense of smell. For example, Large Blue caterpillars let off a special smell that is attractive to red ants. The red ants take the caterpillars into their nests, feed them, and even help carry them out of the nest once they have turned into butterflies. Perhaps the most interesting example of crypsis actually occurred in the plant kingdom. The carrion flower has an odor that smells like rotting meat. This smell attracts flies, which get trapped in its leaves and help pollinate the plants.
