(C) The CIA is an American organization which gathers information about foreign countries via covert operations and espionage in order to advise the president and other government policymakers about issues of national security. You may have seen portrayals of CIA agents handling futuristic gadgets in the movies. However, the truth is often a little more subdued. While the CIA does engage in some special military operations at the request of the president, most of its work is about gathering information, a lot of which comes from monitoring newspapers, audiovisual surveillance and satellite imagery. W1)The spy element comes from the National Clandestine（秘密的）Service, a division within the CIA which recruits people to pose as employees of foreign companies and then report their findings to the agency. These non-official cover agents risk imprisonment and sometimes execution if they are caught since they do not have diplomatic immunity like official diplomats. In its near 65-year history, the CIA has also been involved in some high-profile scandals, including the tapping of civilian phones, and been connected with several assassination plots.
