問題詳情

(D) Anyone with even a minor interest in opera is certainly familiar with the work of Giacomo Puccini. Known for his great operas, Tosca, La Boheme, and Madama Butterfly, he is perhaps the most famous and well-loved Italian composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born into a family with a long history of music in 1858 in Lucca, Italy, Puccini took up music at an early age. Orphaned at the age of five, he was sent to study with his uncle Fortunato Magi, who considered him to be a terribly undisciplined student. Puccini played the organ in local churches throughout his teens, but it wasn’t until he caught a performance of Verdi’s Aida in 1876 that he was inspired to compose operas.A year after graduating with a degree in music composition from the Milan Conservatory in 1883, Puccini premiered his first opera, Le Villi, which was very well received by audiences at the time. In much of his work, Puccini chose to concentrate on life’s familiar passions and intense emotional storms. Worldwide, he is generally accepted as the greatest Verismo composer – a style of opera that depicts everyday life, especially that of the lower classes. His masterpiece, La Boheme, is considered one of the greatest Verismo operas ever written.Puccini died in Brussels, Belgium in 1934 from complications after being treated for throat cancer. His last opera, Turandot, was left unfinished, but was eventually completed after his death. Shortly before he died, Puccini predicted the end of opera as a popular art form in Italy. With his death, Puccini’s prediction came true. In fact, Turandot was the last Italian opera to enjoy worldwide success and no Italian composer since Puccini has enjoyed such a popular following.
