46~50)Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, also known asMERS, is a new respiratory disease caused by the MERScoronavirus,which is identified as a SARS-like virus. For example,President Park Geun-hye of South Korea decided toreschedule her planned visit to the United States in order toguide their country to fight MERS and alleviate the publicfear over this disease. Thousands of schools in South Koreawere also temporarily shut down in order to contain thespread. Because the majority of the confirmed cases werelinked to hospitals, many people were worried about goingto hospitals. Several hospitals were closed down, with allmedical staff, patients and visitors being quarantined untilthey were medically cleared. Several countries have evenissued an alert against travel to South Korea during theMERS outbreak, which has considerably hurt South Korea’seconomy.As of June 2015, there is no cure for MERS. Medicalexperts do not understand the source and transmission ofthe MERS virus clearly enough. Nevertheless, experts anddoctors recommend that people enhance their personalhygiene and prevent the spread of viruses and germs bymeans of three preventive measures: using face masks,washing hands and gargling. They are the first line ofdefense against the disease. It is hoped that raising thehygiene awareness of the public can help reduce thenumber of MERS patients and put the disease undercontrol.
