問題詳情
IV. Reading Comprehension (26%: 47-59)[A] Even though most people may have never noticed, music has not only provided people entertainment but also had considerable influence on society. Take Jazz for example. Louis Armstrong, one of the most famous American jazz musicians, was widely accepted by white people because of his unique singing and playing style. As a private supporter of the Civil Rights movement, he supported civil rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr. in protesting against the government over the rights of black people. Although some African Americans criticized him for his trying to be politically neutral on the racial issue, others thought that his charm of music was indeed helpful in breaking the racial barriers. As for rock ‘n’ roll, it became very popular in the 1950s as the radio helped broadcast the music. American artists such as Elvis Presley became superstars and changed the way young people dressed. Many teenagers did their hair in the same style as their favorite rock star, imitating how the stars danced and even how they spoke and acted. This certainly was something many of the teenagers’ parents and teachers did not approve of. However, as rock ‘n’ roll appeared at the time when racial tensions in the United States began to reduce, the music combined the elements of both white and black music. Quite a few observers contended that this symbolized the reconciliation of black and white people. With the examples above, it is no exaggeration to say that music usually takes part in the evolution of a society. Maybe musicians develop new forms of music not only because they want to entertain people, but also because they want to express their desire for a revolution.
