問題詳情

[B] A Doll’s House is the play that gave Henrik Ibsen, a famous Norwegian playwright, the title “the Father of Modern Drama.” In the play, Nora is a housewife who seems always to wait for her husband to tell her what to do or how to act. Actually, she has worked secretly for years to slowly pay off the medical bills for her husband, Torvald Helmer. As Krogstad, one of Torvald’s employees, has helped Nora take out this secret loan, he then blackmails Nora into helping him keep his job. Though Nora begs her husband not to fire Krogstad, Torvald refuses to listen to a woman’s advice. When the truth about the loan is revealed, Torvald’s outrage causes Nora to question the meaning of her marriage. Before the release of A Doll’s House in 1879, most plays were intended for entertainment purposes. Ibsen took one step further by bringing social issues to the stage. A Doll’s House reflects that both men and women fall into marital roles that society casts for them, and that pretending happiness is more important than truly feeling happy. That’s why Nora is frightened that her husband might find out she has gone beyond a woman’s call of duty as a housewife. Torvald, on the other hand, views looking after Nora as his main purpose in life, since being the caretaker is what society expects of a man. Even after Torvald finds out that his wife has been earning money behind his back, he wants to act as if life was still perfect. With A Doll’s House, Ibsen suggested that a typical “happy marriage,” like the one between Torvald and Nora, is nothing more than make-believe. The fact that Nora and Torvald’s son gets a trumpet for Christmas, while their daughter gets a doll, symbolizes how these roles get passed on from generation to generation. Even if it wasn’t Ibsen’s intention, he indeed inspired many women to reexamine their marriages. At the end of the play, as Nora finally slams the door disappointedly and leaves her husband and children, she indeed opens many doors for women.
