問題詳情
(D)You get into your car at 7:30. The ten-kilometer ride to work should take less than half an hour, but during rush hour that becomes an hour. Then you have to find a parking space. You're lucky to arrive by 9:00.The dream of blasting down near-empty highways, as seen on most TV commercials selling automobiles, has become impossible. Endless lines of cars fill limited traffic lanes. The time lost to each commuter is hundreds of hours per year. There's the expense, too: stop-and-go traffic consumes unnecessary liters of gasoline each week. It also produces extra unwanted pollution. Can anything be done to solve the problem of traffic jams?City planners are now talking about sustainable transportation. Cities are supposed to provide more goods and services more quickly and conveniently, but this is not happening. Delivery trucks compete with buses, taxis, and private cars to reach the same destinations. With sustainable transportation, however, the incentive to drive one's car is decreased. This can happen only when local, regional, and national governments consider the positive effects of sustainable transportation.Subway systems and efficient bus routes are a good first step. Consider New York City, for example. The city is blessed with dozens of subway lines that whisk people from one destination to another. Electric buses drive in lanes reserved for them, reducing the traffic they would otherwise encounter as well as reducing air pollution. Some of these rides are not only faster than when driving a personal car, they are also much cheaper. Bicycle lanes help, too. New Yorkers save nearly $20 billion a year by NOT driving private cars. Planning cities to provide fast, convenient, and affordable transportation will make future urban living cleaner, cheaper, and more enjoyable. (1月教一)
