(B)In Hawaiian, "wiki wiki" means quick. Recently, "wiki" has become known as a collaborative website where anyone is able to post information as well as edit, alter, or delete anyone else's postings. It is kind of a "quick quick" way to gather and maintain a database of information on just about anything, provided that there are enough contributors who have legitimate knowledge to share. This was and is the idea behind Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which started out in 2001, finishing the year with approximately 20,000 posted articles in 18 different language editions. Now in 2006, Wikipedia boasts not only one million registered users but also more than 3.5 million articles in some 200 languages.Despite its tremendous success, the credibility of the entire Wikipedia system has been under assault lately due to some very controversial and inaccurate postings, including the vandalism of a retired journalist's biography. Since anyone is allowed to post or edit the articles on the website, it allows all types of people to add whatever comments they like with total anonymity.Since this act of vandalism, Wikipedia has strengthened its registration procedure so that new stories can only be posted by registered users. The company also issued a new policy about the biographies of living people.A 2004 survey comparing the accuracy of Wikipedia with that of Brockhaus Premium and Microsoft Encarta saw Wikipedia at the top of that survey. In a 2005 survey published in the journal Nature, readers stated that the article accuracy is comparable to that of Encyclopedia Britannica in most areas. With 13,000 or more registered users making at least five edits a month and the addition of their new posting procedures, Wikipeida should stay on top. In addition, its million plus communities of Wikipedians make it an efficient and more credible alternative to other encyclopedias, off-or online. (9-4)
