V. Reading : 8%      Scientists have shown that it is possible to make a piece of meat grow in size by placing it in a container filledwith nutrients. This technology, although still in its early stages, may one day make it unnecessary to kill animals formeat. One day, meat could be produced on an industrial scale just by using muscle cells from animals and fish.   American researchers found that the pieces of goldfish they used in their experiment grew by 14 percent in lessthan a week. The head of the research team, Morris Benjaminson, suggested, “This could save us from having toslaughter animals for food.”    It is hoped that this technology may provide astronauts with a source of nutrition on future missions. Onlong-distance trips to other planets, astronauts could have the choice of real meat, a far tastier alternative to other“ space food,” which is either freeze-dried or has to be squeezed out of tubes.    Previously, German researchers had designed an artificial ecosystem that could provide fresh fish on a spacecraft. However, the live animals produced too much waste, so the American space agency NASA came up with the idea ofgrowing only muscle cells. No one knows what the fish tasted like, although one of the researchers joked that itprobably tasted a bit like chicken.
