問題詳情

V Reading Comprehension 閱讀測驗 10% 每題2分,共5題。Beauty has been seen in many different ways over time. The paintings of famous artists from previous centuries, such as Rubens or Renoir, show full-figured women who today would be considered fat. Yet the painter clearly regarded them as beautiful. In the past, people were much poorer than they are now and could not always afford to eat much food. Being overweight came to be regarded almost as a status symbol because it showed that they were rich enough to eat as much as they wanted. In modern times, when food became available to everyone, the judgment on beauty changed. Thinness became associated with our idea of beauty, as represented by fashion models on catwalks and in magazines. However, nowadays there are signs that things may be changing again. In recent years, there has been growing criticism of models who are too thin. Some politicians have spoken out against thin models, saying that they offer bad role models for young women. They complain that images of thin models make young girls feel pressured and unhappy with their appearance. In November 2006, a Brazilian model, Ana Carolina Reston, even died because, in an effort to remain unnaturally thin, she ate almost no food. In Spain, at the Madrid Fashion Show some models were banned to perform, on account of their very thin appearance. Many European politicians have called for similar action in their own countries. Perhaps a new idea of beauty is in the process of being born.
