They usually live in very large groups called colonies. A colony is formed around a queen ant, who spends her life laying eggs. She is surrounded by workers, who are her children. Their job is to collect things for the queen and the colony to feed on. There are also soldier ants which protect the colony, sometimes by fighting with other colonies.   Ants can be annoying, for example when you are having a picnic and they disturb you. But most of them do not cause harm. However, a few kinds of ants can be dangerous. One of these is the red fire ant. When it bites, you get a strong burning feeling on your skin at once. A few people develop a reaction to the bite and get very sick. Some even die.   The red fire ant comes from Brazil. It has spread to Australia and the United States. In 2004, it was observed in Taiwan for the first time. Red ant nests were seen in four areas on the island, including in the center of Taipei.
