Participants were given doses of caffeine in pill form as wellas placebo pills on a schedule that enabled researchers to measure the sleep-disruptive effects of caffeine taken at 3different points: at bedtime, 3 hours before bedtime, and 6 hours before bed. They found significant disruptions tosleep as a result of caffeine taken at all three points.First, caffeine consumed 0, 3, and 6 hours before bedtime significantly reduced total sleep time. Second, caffeineconsumed at all 3 points diminished sleep quality. Finally, disruptions to sleep as a result of caffeine were perceivedby volunteers for caffeine consumed at bedtime and 3 hours before bed, but were not reported for caffeine taken 6hours before bed. However, sleep monitors measuring total sleep time and sleep efficiency showed that caffeineconsumed 6 hours before bedtime had significant detrimental effects to both.This last finding is especially important, because it suggests that people can’t—and shouldn’t—rely entirely ontheir own perceptions of how much or little caffeine affects their sleep, especially caffeine consumed in the afternoon.Even if you don’t feel that late-afternoon cup of coffee has a negative impact on your sleep, this study suggests that itis likely to be interfering nonetheless.
