問題詳情

66-70 題為題組      Many animals are gradually disappearing from this world. One example is the North AtlanticHumpback. In the past, there were approximately 125,000 humpback whales on earth; however, variousfactors have led to their depletion. Water pollution, underwater sonar testing, illegal hunting, and even theconsumption of their food source have all contributed to the cause of their diminishing number. It ispredicted that in the near future, these whales, like many other endangered species, will become extinct.      With the discovery of DNA, scientists are now saying that it may be possible to bring extinct animalsback to life. However, there are limits to such cloning technology. For instance, it is absolutelynecessary that the collected DNA be complete and preserved. In other words, damaged DNA would beuseless. Furthermore, a surrogate (or substitute) mother will be needed in order to provide a place for theclone to grow and develop. In addition, animals brought back from the past must be able to survive intoday’s world. It is essential that they have a suitable habitat as well as abundant food supplies forsurvival. Last but not least, the technology of cloning requires a tremendous amount of money, time, andeffort in research, so only a small number of animals could be given the privilege of such a “rebirth”.Thus, though cloning may be the key to “saving” some extinct animals, it is by no means the ultimatesolution to the problem of protecting all the species in this world. The best way to keep all living creaturesliving well on earth is for everyone to be more environmentally aware, and more concerned about the safetyof all earth’s creatures!
