問題詳情

Just like all other peoples around the world, the Chinese have a set of table manners, which reflect some of their beliefs and cultures. Usually, the Chinese dine with a round table since they think it is easier for the host to take care of all the guests and for the guests to talk to each other. Unlike the Westerners, it is the main guest who starts the whole meal. The main guest always sits on the right-hand side of the host. When dishes are served, those elderly and respectable people should take first. Younger ones who take first will be considered very rude and uneducated. Besides, no matter how delicious the dishes are, one cannot finish all the things served, which shows that the servings are not enough and will embarrass the host. There are also some rules for cutlery. For the Chinese, it is very impolite to play with the chopsticks, which they use to pick up food. Chopsticks are not allowed to be stuck into the rice inside the bowl since that’s what the Chinese do when burning incense in funerals. They are not supposed to strike bowls with their cutlery because in their culture, only beggars do so. Interestingly, the way one holds the chopsticks can tell the distance between the person’s and his/her spouse’s house. So if the Chinese don’t want to live far array from their parents after getting married, they have to hold the chopsticks in a lower position. And if they don’t want to have a spouse with lots of zits, they should always finish up everything in their bowl.
