問題詳情

The family name Rockefeller is known to almost all Americans. In the 19th century, John D Rockefeller worked and invested in the new oil and gas industry to become, by some accounts, the richest man who ever lived. He started the University of Chicago and Rockefeller University. His son, John D Rockefeller, Jr, became one of New York City’s most powerful financiers and real estate developers. Junior had five sons, of whom one, Nelson, became governor of the state of New York and later vice president of the United States. Another two became governors of other states, and the youngest a New York banker, becoming the CEO of Chase Manhattan, one of the world’s largest banks at the time. Obviously, the Rockefellers are quite a family. One of the many marks Rockefellers have left on US society is Rockefeller Center, a nearly nice-square-hectare development in the heart of Manhattan, itself the heart of New York City. On this large tract of land, 18 skyscrapers were designed and built during the 1930s. They command the skyline between 48th and 51th Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Some of the finest architecture the Big Apple has to offer was built here. In fact, the entire complex is listed on both the US National Register of Historic Places and the US Historic Landmarks. Millions of tourists have been entertained at Radio City Music Hall, seating an audience of 6,000. The flat-topped 70-story General Electric Building tops the crown of surrounding towers. Its flat top allows for a roof garden and viewing deck, giving tourists a 360-degree view of the Manhattan Skyline. The Center also sportsa skating rink, which has been seen in countless movies, and a great deal of public art. Whenever you visit New York City, be sure to visit Rockefeller Center.
