問題詳情

Sports are one of the most popular types of entertainment around the world. International events like the World Cup and the Olympics attract hundreds of millions of viewers via television and hundreds of thousands of in live audiences. A lesser-known sport has been gaining popularity since its first appearance in the Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland in 1952. Synchronized swimming tests athletes’ physical skills as well as their artistic flair.Originally called water ballet or occasionally rhythmic swimming, synchronized swimming is a combination of the skills of swimming, dancing, and gymnastics. Far harder than it looks, the idea of dancing in water to music was first practiced in Germany and Canada from the 1890s. Many swim clubs were formed in both those countries for entertainment as well as athletic competition. The interest in water ballet grew slowly. During the 1940s and 1950s, Esther Williams, an American swimming champion, featured in Hollywood movies with teams of mermaids, quickly popularizing the sport.Though introduced at the Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki, the sport did not become an official competitive sport until 1984 at the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Judges of all synchronized swimming contests look for strength and grace in the swimmers’ movements in equal measure. Balance, poise, rhythmic accuracy, and creativity for individuals and the team as a whole are necessary to earn high scores. Many of the movements made require swimmers to hold their breath underwater for somewhat long periods of time while strenuously exerting themselves, which is no small feat. In short, only the most qualified among athletes can compete in synchronized swimming. The sport is not all about competitions, though. The beauty of dance, the exhilaration of music, and the inspiration of athletic performance are always apparent when synchronized swimming is presented. If you haven’t seen synchronized swimming yet, be sure to watch the next Summer Olympic Games.
