Without an explicit, measurable goal, both counsellor andclient may get distracted in pursuit of other topics or concerns.Having a clear target in mind, the intervention process may begin. 24 The mostcommon type of intervention is the person-centered approach. It places a large emphasis onthe client’s own ability to solve their problems, contrasted with traditional psychotherapywhich viewed the client more as a patient that required curing. Any progress made by theclient is considered the outcome of their efforts rather than the counsellor’s successfultreatment.All counselling aims towards successful termination. 25 Preparation for terminationbegins long before the actual closure, as the counsellor must be mindful throughout thesessions not to foster dependency. However, termination does not imply the door ofcounselling is closed permanently; the client may always return should they require assistanceonce more.
