However, counselling is more than simply listening to someone’sproblems and giving them feedback or advice. It is a planned, structured dialogue between atrained counsellor and client aiming to identify and overcome any difficulties or concerns theclient is facing. The first step in the counselling process is relationship building. 21 Drawing onperformances by the client, the counsellor focuses on engaging clients to explore issues thatdirectly affect them. The client reads verbal and non-verbal messages and judges if thecounsellor is empathetic and genuine. It is crucial for the counsellor at this stage to avoidexcessive questioning or immediate lecturing. As the relationship is being built, the next step is problem assessment.22 It’s not uncommon for the client to misidentify their own emotions or difficulties, hence the importance for the counsellor to assist them in clarifying the core of their concerns. On the other hand, the counsellor must take caution not to steer the client in a certain direction, but instead paraphrase the client’s own words. After focusing on a major issue, the counsellor and client can then move on to goalsetting. 23 For the benefit of the client, they must be feasible and related to the desiredends sought after by the client. Without an explicit, measurable goal, both counsellor andclient may get distracted in pursuit of other topics or concerns.Having a clear target in mind, the intervention process may begin. 24 The mostcommon type of intervention is the person-centered approach. It places a large emphasis onthe client’s own ability to solve their problems, contrasted with traditional psychotherapywhich viewed the client more as a patient that required curing. Any progress made by theclient is considered the outcome of their efforts rather than the counsellor’s successfultreatment. All counselling aims towards successful termination. 25 Preparation for terminationbegins long before the actual closure, as the counsellor must be mindful throughout thesessions not to foster dependency. However, termination does not imply the door ofcounselling is closed permanently; the client may always return should they require assistanceonce more.
