問題詳情

(D) NASA has stated its goal of establishing colonies in space. Scientists believe that as a species, human beings must eventually inhabit other planets if we are to survive for hundreds of thousands of years or perhaps even longer. The rapidly increasing consumption of the Earth’s resources to sustain our way of life will undoubtedly continue as more countries evolve from agricultural to industrial societies. More and more people will be competing for the same resources. That humanity is currently limited to one planet is now seen as a problem. Many scientists believe space colonies are the answer to this problem. Space offers plenty of raw materials and unlimited solar power. Vacuum and microgravity would free us from gravity and make possible the development of products and technologies far beyond our current imaginations. The moon and minor planets could be mined to build power satellites that would supplement or even replace power plants on Earth, replacing our current earth-polluting industries. The stuff of science fiction not long ago, now space colonies seem to be just a matter of time.
