(E) The smartphone wars have been ongoing since 2009, when Nokia accused Apple of stealing over ten of its patents. A patent is an acknowledgement from the government that an inventor has sole right to make, use, or sell an invention for a period of time. Lawsuits have been increasing ever since Nokia cast the first stone.Patent lawsuits are not as clear-cut as they appear on paper. A lot of companies buy up patents from smaller companies and then use those during the trials as evidence of their creativity. Unfortunately, in the US this passes for innovation. In August 2012, Apple won a landmark lawsuit against its biggest competitor—Samsung. The US courts decided that Samsung must pay Apple US$1.1 billion for patent violations. Some of these violations include using the pinch-to-zoom, the bounce back feature when a window hits the screen’s edge, and the slide to unlock.Apple’s lawsuits are legendary—there is even a Wikipedia entry detailing the subject. However, technology experts believe Apple is openly attempting to wipe out Samsung. Instead of encouraging innovation, Apple is suffocating creativity in an attempt to own the entire smartphone market. An example of Apple’s intentional efforts to keep Samsung back includes their claim to own shapes like rectangles with rounded corners.Samsung intends to challenge the court’s decision. However, if they lose this battle, US consumers can expect higher prices and a limited phone selection.
