(A) Pepsi is one of the most popular drinks in the world, as this carbonated beverage can be found practically anywhere you go: restaurants, stores and vending machines. There are a variety of flavors of Pepsi like Pepsi Light, Pepsi Twist, and Pepsi Blue, just to name a few. This refreshing drink was actually originally formulated to be a tonic for indigestion; incidentally the word “pepsi” means digestion in Greek. Pepsi, however, wasn’t called Pepsi at first but actually “Brad’s Drink,” named after Caleb D. Bradham from North Carolina who invented the formula.Caleb Bradham was attending medical school when his father announced that his business was failing, so Caleb decided to drop out of school and open up his own pharmacy in order to help his father through hard times. Like most pharmacies during that era, it had a soda fountain where customers could refresh themselves with a drink while they waited to get their prescriptions filled.Caleb Bradham devised a drink from carbonated water, sugar, vanilla, pepsin, and cola nuts and claimed that it would help relieve people’s indigestion. He served it from his soda fountain, and it became increasingly popular, which subsequently persuaded Caleb Bradham to try selling his beverage on the national market.Changing the name to Pepsi-Cola and asking a neighbor to design the product’s logo, Caleb Bradham opened up bottling lines to package the drink and began advertising campaigns across the country. Unfortunately, World War I broke out. Then the Great Depression swept across America and caused Caleb Bradham to go bankrupt. He was forced to sell his company in an auction.Pepsi went through several hands of ownership, and different marketing strategies were executed in attempts to increase its popularity. However, it wasn’t until the Pepsi Challenge in 1975, where blind taste tests showed that people preferred Pepsi over Coke, causing sales of Pepsi to skyrocket and making it one of today’s leading beverages.
51. At first, Pepsi was created for the purpose of ______.
(A) making people feel refreshed
(B) helping people lose weight
(C) treating indigestion
(D) relieving people of pressure
