(A)We usually think of teenagers as having plenty of youthful energy.But in a recent survey in America, sixty percent of children under 18complained of being tired during the day. Fifteen percent admittedto falling asleep at school at least once in the past year.According to parents, teenagers are more often tired during the daythan younger children.      Despitesleepiness being a problem in the U.S., nearly two-thirds ofAmericans have never been asked about their sleep by a doctor. Amongthe young, that figure rises to 75%. The tiredness of teenagerscould be a result of them trying to do too much. Half of teenagerssay that, rather than go to bed early, they stay up to watch TV, usethe Internet, or study.      Anotherproblem is that during the teenage years, the human body goes throughchanges that affect its "sleep clock." Many adolescentsare just not physically ready to fall asleep until 11:00 pm or later.The average teenagers need about nine hours of sleep, but manystudents sleep less than seven hours because they need to get toschool by 7:30 am or even earlier. That's why they experiencesleepiness during the day.      ManyAmerican parents think school times should be adjusted so thatteenagers can sleep later in the morning. They say it is time forhigh schools to have later starting and finishing times to helpstudents achieve their full potential. Educational authorities donot agree. They are afraid of changing school hours in case it wouldcause problems such as extra operating costs.
