問題詳情

(D) Next Monday is the biggest exam of your life and you haven't started studying yet but you need sleep. Sleep or study? What if someone told you that you could sleep for only two to four hours each day by way of 20-minute power naps and actually feel better than most people do on a "normal" sleep cycle?     Dr. Claudio Stampi believes that if people can work out a specialized sleep schedule, they can capitalize on their productive (awake and alert) time rather than sleeping it away. Growing up on boats, Stampi became immersed in the study of sleep (or lack of it) and its effect on the human body and mind. An Italian-born doctor with degrees in Neurology and Biomedical Technologies, Stampi is the founder and director of the Chronobiology Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, where he works with world-class athletes to maximize their performance while minimizing their need for sleep.     Commonly referred to as the Polyphasic Sleep, it is based on the theory that there are two stages of sleep: REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, important for memory and learning, and non-REM sleep, which restores energy and releases hormones for growth and development. The theory is that REM sleep, which occurs late in the stages of monophasic or "regular" sleep, is the only stage that is absolutely essential for our bodies to survive and rejuvenate. All the other stages can be compensated for by a change in diet. During polyphasic sleep, your body's natural survival instincts force your body to enter REM sleep faster during your naps. Therefore, this gets the required minimum of 1.5 hours of REM sleep per 24-hour period in many phases (hence polyphasic).      It is believed that such historic figures as Leonardo Da Vinci, Buckminster Fuller, Thomas Jefferson, and Winston Churchill were polyphasic sleepers because they all favored little sleep with frequent naps.
