V. Reading Comprehension (32%)
(A)As we become used to things, we can take them for granted. The roads we drive on, the electricity we use, and the libraries we study in are all man-made utilities we expect to always be there. One invention which has allowed the development of modern mega-cities and therefore modern civilization itself is also ignored. That relatively simple device—the elevator—has allowed humanity to benefit from its efficiency, safety, and convenience.     The first known mention of a machine that could lift objects was in 236 BC, designed by Archimedes, a famed Greek scientist. In 1000 AD, a machine built to raise heavy cannons was described in Spanish texts. Up to that time, power to operate elevators was provided by man or animal. With the introduction of steam and electric power in the 18th and 19th centuries respectively, elevators resembling modern-day ones were invented. Elisha Otis demonstrated his newly designed safety elevator in the 1850s.     Those who use elevators, called lifts in British English, rarely stop to think what elevators have done for the world around us. The most obvious advantage is the development of the skyscraper. How would you like to climb 20 stories to your office every day? From the first passenger elevator installed in a New York City apartment building in 1857, architects have been able to design ever-taller structures. Elevators are used not only for passengers but for the movement of construction materials and machines long before the first occupant of a building pushes an elevator button. Used in factories and warehouses, elevators allow for products to be stacked higher. Even aircraft carriers use elevators to hoist jets from inside the vessel to the top deck runway. The next time you are in an elevator, think about what the elevator has done for you and society. (教一)
