In the United States, many manufactured goods include the words “Made in China.”But one small company in the American state of Georgia is making traditional Chinesechopsticks—and sending them to China. Chopsticks are sticks used in some Asiancountries to eat food. They are often made out of wood, but can also be made of plastic.36 Several hundred Chinese manufacturers produce about sixty-three billion pairs ofchopsticks a year. However, those manufacturers need more wood.This small company in the American city of Americus, Georgia has recognized theneed of the Chinese manufacturers. 37 Korean-American Jae Lee is the president ofGeorgia Chopsticks. He says that about one-third of the world’s population uses chopsticksand hence the world market for chopsticks is huge. 38In central Georgia, sweet gum and poplar trees grow in large numbers. 39 Thisis because the wood is not firm and has a nice color. Unlike many Asian chopsticks, theseGeorgia-made chopsticks do not need to be lightened with chemicals and bleach.40 Suddenly, there’s a huge nation, the fastest growing in the world, whichfinances part of American people’s national debt, and here Americans are making their basicproducts and shipping it to them, like they’ve done for Americans for years. It’s just kindof a reverse.
