問題詳情
(四) (第 13 題可以用「中文」或「英文」作答) There is an old saying that America and Britain are “two nations divided by a common language.”No one knows exactly who said this, but it shows the way many Brits feel about American English. MyBritish friend still tells me, “You don’t speak English. You speak American.” But are American andBritish English really so different? One of the differences between American and British English is vocabulary. There are hundredsof different everyday words. For example, Brits call the front of a car the bonnet, while Americans callit the hood. Americans go on vacation, while Brits go on holidays, or hols. New Yorkers live inapartments; Londoners live in flats. There are far more examples than we can talk about here.Fortunately, most Americans and Brits can usually guess the meaning through the context of asentence. You will also find some small differences with the spelling. In American English textbooks, theytalk about red color, while in British textbooks it is spelled as red colour. In England, people go to asports centre, but in America, they go to a sports center. United States students practice soccer, butBritish students practise football. However, British and American English are not so different at all. Most Brits and Americans canunderstand each other without too much difficulty. They watch each other’s TV shows, sing eachother’s songs, and read each other’s books. They even make fun of their differences. For example, youcan see Americans wear pants on the street, but you might not see Brits do that. Do you know why?
