With deceptivelysimple style, rarely 38 in her poems. Instead, she likes understatement, oftenspeaking in a soft voice, as if she 39 to an intimate friend.    In “To a Daughter Leaving Home,” Linda Pastan sensitively 40 a mother’semotional state when her grown-up daughter is about to leave home and move on intoa bigger world. 41 dealing with the parting directly, Linda Pastan probes themother’s state of mind through reminiscence about her daughter’s learning to ride abike, a symbol of independence. The mother’s anxiety about her daughter possiblyfalling off the bike is contrasted sharply 42 the little girl’s excitement about hernewly acquired skill. Although parentsare willing to bear the burden of educating their children to become independent, theyare often reluctant to give their children free rein 45 they should end up hurtingthemselves while venturing out into the real world. The parents’ concern and worryare clearly revealed in these 46 lines: “you grew/smaller, more breakable/withdistance.”      At the end of the poem, Linda Pastan uses a simile, “like a handkerchief wavinggoodbye” to finish the story, leaving a melancholy atmosphere or mood to the readersand keeping them 47 of what they may experience, or what they haveexperienced.
