In the salons, mencould talk politics without risk. And, as Benedetta Craveriargues in The Age of Conversation, they even helped define "correct" French, somewhere between palace clichés andstreet 6 . They did this through the art of conversation. The salons were, of course, also nests of gossip. In fact, many of the stories recounted in this dense butentertaining book 7 "Dallas" in wigs and corsets. Amid a large cast of characters, Craveri, an Italian professor ofFrench literature, helpfully highlights the most influential, 8 and scandalous of these irrepressible women. Evenso, in Teresa Waugh's stylish translation, this is a book to be taken in9 bites. It covers the period from the creation of the most important salon at the hôtel de Rambouillet around 1610 to therevolution of 1789.
