A good diet and ample exercise don’t just help your waistline. Healthylifestyle factors may also help lower your risk of dementia, even if youhave a higher genetic risk, according to a study published on Sunday inthe medical journal JAMA.This study, along with other research looking at the impact of lifestylefactors on dementia, is being presented at the Alzheimer’s AssociationInternational Conference this week.
There is no cure for or preventive medicine that can stop dementia andits most common form, Alzheimer’s disease. But a growing body ofevidence suggests the way you live can potentially lower your risk.
The study found that among people with a high genetic risk, those whomaintained a healthy lifestyle -- meaning they watched their diet,exercised regularly, kept their drinking to a minimum and didn't smoke -- were less likely to develop dementia later in life.
The study looked at 196,383 adults age 60 and older who lived in theUK and found that specifically, 1.13% of those with a healthy lifestyledeveloped dementia later in life compared with 1.78% of those with aless healthy lifestyle -- a statistically significant difference. The adultswho took part in the study joined it from 2006 to 2010 and researchersfollowed up with them until 2016 to 2017.
