(3) Customs vary from country to country. Every country has its own do’s and don’ts, and Turkey is no exception. So, before visiting Turkey, you had better learn something about Turkish etiquette to avoid embarrassment. In Turkey, people may shake hands or kiss each other on the face when meeting, but this may be inappropriate between sexes in rural areas because people there are more conservative. Also, the way Turkish people express “yes” and “no” is a bit different from that of Western people. The Turks nod their heads to indicate “yes”; however, shaking their heads means that they are not understanding what you’re talking about. The way for them to indicate “no” is to nod their heads with their eyebrows raised.        There are two things that foreigners should particularly pay heed to when visiting Turkey. One is that when sitting with Turkish people, be careful not to expose the sole of your foot directly to others. The Turks are accustomed to sitting on the floor cross-legged, which can be uncomfortable for foreigners. If you get a cramp and need to stretch your legs, you should be careful not to straighten your legs and point them toward anyone else. The other important rule is that you should not give a knife directly to another person. You should put the knife on the table and let the other one get it by himself or herself. If you give the knife to the other person directly, the person that receives it will spit over the knife so as to prevent any discord between the two of you.        Many visitors like to visit the wonderful mosques in Turkey. Before entering mosques, people are supposed to take off their shoes. Dressing modestly with most of your body covered is also very important, especially for women. Some mosques will even provide long robes for visitors. If someone is praying, under no circumstances should you walk directly in front of him or her or take a picture. The list of do’s and don’ts in Turkey could go on and on. To be on the safe side, you had better read up on the place before visiting this charming West Asian country.
