(C.) Pandora's Box Long ago, there were only men on the earth. Prometheus had made them, and Athena had breathed life into them. However, the chief god Zeus didn’t like them and didn’t treat themwell. At a festival the men were going to sacrifice a bull for the first time. Yet, in order to avenge the insult on Zeus for men, Prometheus played a trick on Zeus. After Zeus found outthat he had been tricked, he ruffled.He then took fire away from men so that they could never cook food and feel warm again. Prometheus turned to the smith Hephaestus for help. Hecarried a burning torch back to men. Owing to this, Zeus was enraged again so he started making an evil plan. Zeus set Hephaestus the task of creating a clay woman, named Pandora.Athena breathed life into it, taught the woman how to weave and clothed her. Aphrodite made her beautiful. And the god Hermes taught her to charm and deceive. Epimetheus,Prometheus’s brother, saw Pandora and fell in love with her at the first sight. When Epimetheus and Pandora got married, Zeus promised a wedding gift to Pandora, which was abeautiful golden box. However, there was one condition that she could never open the box. Nevertheless, Pandora couldn’t stand the temptation so she took the huge key, fitted itcarefully into the lock and turned it. After that, she found out the room was filled with terrible things coming from the box: disease, despair, malice, greed, old age, death, hatred,violence, cruelty and war. She slammed the lid down and kept only the spirit of hope inside. To this day, sometimes even when things are really bad, what we still have is hope. Hope isthere. No matter what may happen, we should always look forward to the future and keep on going.
