(B)A sentence without punctuation is not easy to understand. In Ancient Greece, it looked like this: TOBEORNOTTOBETHATISTHEQUESTION. The lack of punctuation probably didn’t bother good readers, __17__. When they read, they just put pauses __18__ they fit best. But it might have been confusing to many ordinary people. __19__, at that time, sentences often switched directions. To make reading easier, in the 5th century, two punctuation marks appeared, spaces and points. The former separated words __20__ the latter showed pauses in reading. Later, periods appeared to signal a complete stop of a sentence, and the slash(/), used to indicate a short pause, was transformed into the modern comma __21__. After that, other marks joined the punctuation family. The newest mark, the “interrobang,” came into __22__ in 1962. This shows that English is not yet finished with its punctuation.
