III. Fill-in (10%)    For many high school students, tests are a necessary evil that readies them for the College Entrance Exam but mean hell __41__ the only thing they get is suffering. They might even think that they are not high school material as a result of repeated failure. I used to think so __42__ I read “General MacArthur’s Prayer for His Son.” Frankly speaking, I think he asked too much of God for his son. I am not sure whether I will also grow up to embody all the character traits that he asked God to build in his son. But I am sure that some of those traits can help me foster a more __43__ attitude toward tests. To begin with, I should expect myself to be a person whose wishbone should not be where his backbone should be. I should set reasonable goals, __44__ them and try my best to achieve them. How much I can do about them involves sacrifices of the pleasure and fun I can __45__ have if I give up or if I don’t bother to set goals. The process will be hard for sure and sometimes even unbearable. However, if I choose to carry on to the end, I can at the very least prove myself to be a person of determination and __46__. When the outcome is favorable, I deserve it. Knowing that great success results from great effort, I should also be humble and gentle in victory. When the outcome turns out to be __47__ satisfactory, I should be proud and unbending in honest defeat because I have already tried my best. I then should not take myself and the defeat too seriously. On the other side of the equation of “effort plus failure” are the two things that I deserve. One is the respect, from others and especially from myself. The other is the __48__ from the annoying “if only” thought that can inflict more pain upon me when I think I could have succeeded __49__ I tried harder. Whether I succeed or not, I can always further __50__ myself. By changing my frame of mind about tests, I will no longer be framed by them.
