(A)WASHINGTON, D.C) – Democrat Carl ArlingThursday upset Vice President LawrenceLetterman, taking 52.4% of the popular vote tobecome the 43rd president of the United States.  The come-from-behind Democratic victoryalso made Gov. Bartley Depointe the nation’sfirst black vice president elect. The Democratic ticket swept the largeindustrial states of both north and south to pileup 308 electoral votes to 230 votes forRepublican candidate, Vice PresidentLawrence Letterman. The Democrats alsoregained control of the Senate and the Houseof Representatives for the first time in 8 years. “This gives us the people’s mandate for aradical change in our industrial policies, torestructure our economy so it can provide jobsand income for all,” Arling said in his victorystatement. Arling said he would start workimmediately to select a cabinet and a transitionteam.It was a landslide win by more than 12%in California that finally gave Arling amajority in the electoral college. The pattern of the voting was not regional,analysts said. Everywhere in the countryLetterman did well in rural areas and wealthysuburbs while Arling scored heavily in the innercities.  The battle was closest among the middle-class suburbs where Arling’s call for arestructured, high technology industrial baseseemed to have great voter appeal.  Analysts said that the deteriorating economyand a lackluster performance by Letterman in anationally televised debate also worked toArling’s favor. Although he started well behindthe better known Letterman, the Democraticcandidate gained momentum throughout thecampaign to pull ahead of the Republican onelection day.
