At the beginning, the storysold very poorly upon publication in book form and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century, despite the success of its various film and stage adaptations. One of the most notable of these was Andrew Lloyd Webber's1986 musical. The story revolves around a beautiful opera singer and a young composer shamed by his physicalappearance. The music, lyrics, set design, and story perfectly match each other. The scenes flow together seamlessly, whichis certainly attributed to the director Harold Prince, from Christeen Diae's dressing room to the Phantom's layer and into themanager's office and on to the grand stair case for Masquerade. This gives a very cinematic feel to the show. Moreover, the2004 film version of The Phantom of the Opera has also generated more interest in the stage musical, and those who wouldnot normally go to the theatre have ventured to see what all the fuss is about.
