Winners are awarded the statuette, the Oscar, whichis officially named the Academy Award of Merit. As the oldest entertainment awardsceremony in the United States, the Oscars has many equivalents—the Emmy Awardsfor television, the Tony Awards for theatre, and the Grammy Awards for music andrecording, which are all modeled after the Academy Awards.In 1929, the first Academy Awards was presented at a private dinner at theHollywood Roosevelt Hotel. A total of 270 people attended the ceremony and fifteengolden statuettes were awarded to distinguished artists, directors and otherpersonalities of the film-making industry for their works. At the 29th ceremony, theBest Foreign Language Film category was first introduced. After that,foreign-language films were honored with the Special Achievement Award. As of the83rd Academy Awards ceremony held in 2011, a total of 2,894 Oscars have been givenfor 1,853 awards.
