　　OscarWilde was born in Dublin, Ireland on October 16, 1854. His mother wasalso a great writer. As a child, Oscar spent many years in Ireland.After college, he took several different jobs, such as teaching andwriting. These jobs took him to the United States, Canada, andFrance.

       Afterhis trips to different countries, Oscar stayed in England and gotmarried. Around this time, he wrote many children’s stories. Histwo most famous children’s stories are “The Selfish Giant” and“The Happy Prince”, which were first written for his two sons.

      Oscaralso wrote a few very popular plays, such as An Ideal Husband, AWoman of No Importance, Lady Windermere’s Fan and The Importance ofBeing Earnest. Today, his plays are still quite popular all overthe world, and some of them have been made into movies.

         ThoughOscar died rather young—at the age of 46, he has been remembered asa great writer. His stories, plays, and famous quotes are widely readand remembered even today. One of his famous quotes says, “We areall in the gutter (貧民窟)but some of us are looking at the stars.”
