IV.Reading Comprehension (20%) (1) Many people consider Thomas Edison to be a model of genius. His inventions havecertainly stood the test of time. Throughout his career, Edison invented many devices that changed the world such as the light bulb, the motion picture camera, and the record player. Besides, he also invented the direct current (DC) system for electricity distribution. He patented (取得專利) over a thousand other ideas and inventions that he never completed. However, it is his passion and determination which helped diversify his inventions.  Edison faced many challenges in his childhood. For example, he became completely deaf as a teenager and attended school for just three months. However, instead of giving in to fate, he worked tirelessly on his inventions because he was passionate about what he was doing. He became successful because he chose something he loved for his career and he completely devoted himself to his work. The other factor that made Edison a successful inventor was his incredible determination. For instance, before he developed a successful model for the first light bulb, he had failed nearly 700 times. Yet, Edison believed his “mistakes” were not really failures. He saw them as the progress towards creating a light bulb that worked. Other people may have given up after encountering frustration, but Edison kept trying until he found a successful way to solve the problem.  We can all learn from the example of Edison. He proved that if you are really passionate about what you are doing, you can achieve success in whatever you choose to do. But passion by itself is not enough. Edison demonstrated that to be truly successful we must also insist whenever we experience setbacks in our work or in life. If we can have both passion and determination like Edison did, then everything is possible.
