(CNN, Romania, 07/21/2009) Radu Mazare, the mayor of the town of Constanta,Romania, and his 15-year-old son were accused of supporting Naizism by wearing WWIIGerman army uniform and marching the Nazi 'goose step’ in a recent political rally.Marco Katz, the chairperson of an organization against Nazism, said Mazare hadbroken Romanian law and encouraged his son to do the same, "educating him to treat thelaw with contempt." He said the mayor was sending a message "that to wear Naziuniforms and to march the Nazi steps is legal and 'in vogue' in Romania." He thereforeurged the authorities to take action against Mazare’s behavior.Mazare, 41, said he had not noticed the Nazi swastika symbol on the uniform beforehe wore it, according to the Romanian Times. "I checked it before I put it on but theswastika was very small and I didn't see it," he said. "I really liked the look of the uniformafter seeing it in the Tom Cruise film 'Valkyrie.' I bought it from a costume hire shop inGermany."Efraim Zuroff, a top Nazi hunter in Jerusalem, said Mazare should quit and leave hispost. He said the uniform Mazare wore was known as the Wehrmacht, which symbolized“the mass murder of European Jewish people and many other innocent victims. By putting on a Wehrmacht, you are expressing total support and nostalgia for an army… ofgenocide."Romania was a Nazi ally from 1940 to 1944, under the leadership of General IonAntonescu, who was deposed in 1944.
