IV Reading Comprehension 閱讀測驗 5% 每題1分,共5題。Ebonics is often thought of as “Black English,” or the style of speech used by African Americans. The word “Ebonics” is a mixture of the words “ebony (black)” and “phonics (the study of sound).” Some consider it a general term which refers to all common expressions, slang, and altered pronunciation used by this group of people.Ebonics is usually used by African Americans on informal occasions. Those who use this language style in a casual environment may easily change to speak Standard English in more formal circumstances such as at work. Ebonics has its roots in the African language, and it’s an interesting aspect of the African American culture. On humorous American television shows, African American characters sometimes speak Ebonics to strengthen funny moments, call attention to a point, or reflect surroundings or social classes.Usually, Ebonics can be recognized in several ways. For instance, people who speak it often drop some sound. Thus, “working” sounds like “workin’.” Another example is “ain’t,” which is used to replace “don’t,” “isn’t,” etc. Therefore, phrases like “Why you ain’t tell me?” means “Why don’t you tell me?” In addition, “Ima tell you....” is often heard, too. It means “I am going to tell you....”Some people think Ebonics is an inferior language because it is often used by those with low levels of education. However, it does follow a system. It isn’t just a lazy form of Standard English. Instead, it shows a different culture.
