問題詳情

五、Reading Comprehension (14%)At the end of October, parts of southern California were hit by some of the worst wildfires in recent years. The fires forced nearly 500,000 people to leave their homes. Altogether, more than 2,000 houses were destroyed, and at least fourteen people died as a result of the fires. Officials stated that a recent drought in the area, along with high temperatures and usually strong winds, caused several smaller fires to grow into a large firestorm that burned out of control for days. More than 9,000 firefighters from across the state were called in to battle the blazes. Besides, the president claimed that the federal government would offer aid to all those affected by the fires, and he ordered 1,000 workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help out in the area. The initial cause of the fires remains unknown, but investigators suspect that some of the fires may have been started deliberately. In one case at least, a boy had admitted to having started a fire accidentally, after playing with matches. The resulting fire destroyed 21 homes and burned up over 30,000 acres of land. With the fires now mostly under control, many people have started to return to their homes. Some admit that it is a scary for them to go back to the site of the fires, and many are worried that they will have to face more devastating wildfires again in the future.
