問題詳情

V. Reading Comprehension 10 % (@1)The Dead Sea is one of the world’s most famous natural wonders. The so-called sea is in fact a lake and is one of the saltiest lakes on Earth with 33.7 percent salinity. The extremely high salt content prevents animal life from finding a home in its waters. Still, many tourists visit the Dead Sea, and they marvel at the strangeness of it. Bathers in the lake tell stories of how the salt allows them to float without having to move a muscle. Many pictures have been taken of people floating in the Dead Sea with their feet up while they are holding newspapers. However, the Dead Sea may finally be dying. Water levels in the lake have gone down drastically and shrunk by almost a third over the last century. The main reason for this is human thirst. The lake is fed by the famous Jordan River, which has been tapped for drinking water by Israel, Syria, and Jordan. Another factor is factories on the shores of the lake, which evaporate the water to extract minerals. The search is on for a way to stop the shrinkage, and one proposal is to make a canal that would feed water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. However, environmental groups have pointed out that this may damage the ecology of the Red Sea and change the water chemistry of the Dead Sea. Unfortunately, as one Israeli geologist puts it, it may be a matter of choosing between bad and worse (Adopted from Ivy League Analytical English, no. 269, pp. 4-5. Ivy League Publications, 2010).
