According to legend, Taiwan once sat at the bottom of the ocean until one day a great flood lifted the island to the surface. Meanwhile, several nearby islands, home to the Puyuma’s ancestors, sank to the bottom of the sea. All the islands that remained were what are now Green Island and Orchid Island.　　Most of the Puyuma tribe dropped underwater along with the islands’ other living creatures (生物), and they had never been seen again. The only survivors of the flood were five siblings (兄弟姊妹) who were left floating on the ocean. Both the sun and the moon had fallen into the ocean, and the world went dark. After much thought, the five siblings chose one among them to become the sun and another to become the moon. The brother and sister remained in the sky, taking turns lighting up the day and night skies for the rest of the world.　　The remaining three siblings continued floating on the sea, and they finally landed on the island of Taiwan. They settled at a place called Ruvuahan or Panapanyan and became the ancestors of today’s Puyuma tribe. Today, the people living in Ruvuahan believe their ancestors were born our of a rock, and the people in Panapanyan think their ancestors came out of a bamboo. Therefore, both these places share the same meaning—the place of origin.
