Part 6. Short Passage Questions (3%)      At the end of each year, many people feel goodwill toward others, also known as the Christmas spirit. There is one instance in history which captures the true essence of the Christmas spirit. In 1914, on the front lines of a World War I battlefield, the Christmas Truce took place. Opposing British and German armies had dug themselves into trenches and were only tens of yards apart. Between them lay the cold, wet, and muddy area called No Man's Land. Soldiers on each side sang patriotic songs to keep their spirits up. As Christmas got closer, they began singing Christmas carols. Even though each side had different lyrics, the melodies were the same. After one side sang a song, the other would applaud them. On Christmas Eve, the German soldiers placed small trees lit with candles on the edges of their trenches. Soon, a temporary truce was called. Soldiers emerged from their trenches, meeting in the middle of No Man's Land. They shook hands and exchanged small gifts with each other. The truce did not hold, and soon after Christmas the fighting resumed. But this one small event showed that even in the depths of misery, the Christmas spirit could still be found.
